Military service can provide opportunities for job training, education benefits, travel, leadership development, and serving your country. Before making a decision, it is important to learn about the different military branches, career options, enlistment requirements, and available benefits.

  • Education Benefits

  • There are six branches of the United States military, each offering unique career opportunities and ways to serve:

    • Army – Focuses on land-based operations and missions.

    • Navy – Conducts operations at sea and around the world.

    • Air Force – Specializes in air, space, and cyber operations.

    • Marine Corps – Provides rapid-response forces for missions on land and at sea.

    • Coast Guard – Protects U.S. waterways and supports maritime safety and security.

    • Space Force – Focuses on protecting U.S. interests in space and supporting space operations.

  • The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a test that helps determine your strengths, interests, and qualifications for military service. Your scores can also help identify career pathways both in and out of the military.

    VVISD high schools offer the ASVAB free of charge to interested students each semester. Contact your school counselor for information about upcoming testing dates. Students may also work with a military recruiter to schedule the test.

    One of the most important ASVAB scores is the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) score, which is used by military branches to determine enlistment eligibility.

    Minimum AFQT score requirements vary by branch and may change over time. Students interested in military service should visit Military.com or speak with a recruiter for the most current requirements.
